Solar Eclipse Precautions for Our District

As many of you are aware, Monday afternoon from 11:39am to 2:37pm our area will experience a solar eclipse.  While this is a terrific scientific phenomenon, there is a danger if people stare at the sun during that time.  Since it is very difficult to control children’s natural curiosity, Fort Gibson Schools will hold all elementary and middle school students in class during that time.  We will watch coverage of the eclipse and allow students to look out windows that are not in line with the sun.  High school students will still be allowed to transition from building to building, but staff will be directing them as they pass, to ensure they do not look at the sun during that time.  Athletics will be held inside until 2:40pm.  Since the event ends at 2:37pm, buses will run on time.  The only students who will be allowed outside during this time will be those whose parents come check them out or if a high school teacher has a planned activity for safe viewing and has garnered parent permission forms.

At all sites, we will take advantage of this opportunity to explain the safety precautions, but also to use it as an opportunity to learn about and study a historic event!
